Do you know the way to San Jose? South Bay Mobilization figured AAT would when they called for a New Years Day "skate-in" against corporate sponsorship of San Jose's Holiday Ice Rink by an outfit called Jeppesen, who were exposed as coordinators of CIA "extraordinary rendition" flights (kidnapping to send victims to be tortured in secret prisons) in a New Yorker article by Jane Mayer, in the magazine's edition of Oct 30, 2006. Resisting the negligable temptation to watch boring Bowl games on TV, contingents from the East and West Bay converged on a city-organized rink across the street from Plaza de Cesar Chavez, and helped our South Bay friends and Raging Grannies make clear that helping the U.S. government to commit torture is not acceptable in San Jose or anywhere else. See a short video posted on YouTube (via IndyBay) for more about skating-against-torture in San Jose. |

"Downtown Ice" is the Downtown Association's winter skating rink at San Jose's Circle of Palms. |

Directly out front of the city's Museum of Art, it's located in the heart of the South Bay. |

Quite a few activists converged on New Years Day 2007 to make the point that this is no place for holiday activities sponsored by merchants of torture. |

This is the offending banner, marking the corporate sponsorship of Jeppesen, a company that arranges torture-kidnapping flights (a.k.a. "extraordinary rendition) for the CIA. |

Activists aim to ice the Jeppesen banner. |

Some passed out leaflets to the milling crowds... |

... as others dramatized the plight of torture victims and those who have been detained for five years at Guantanamo and other military prisons with no charges and no trials |
|
Wearing orange and demanding an end to torture and indefinite detention, South Bay Mobilization, Act Against Torture, and others took to the ice. |
|
Just because ice skaters can sidestep doesn't mean it's okay for Jeppesen... |

San Jose says "no" to torture. |

The message in a nutshell... |

After a while activists called it an afternoon. But we won't be done with Jeppesen until they sever all ties with U.S. government torturers and kidnappers. |
